The Great Race kick-off begins at 12 noon!Historic aircraft will take to the skies as pilots circle runway 17 to entertain the crowds. Get up close as we demonstrate a curated selection of the museum’s automobiles… you might even get a ride. There will be fun for the whole family with hands-on STEM activities and Model T rides. Excitement builds with the Great Race opening ceremonies at 3:45PM. Competition revs-up in the final phase of the race– be there to cheer on the drivers as they cross the end-of-day finish line at 4:00PM! Celebrate seasoned and rookie teams plus give a warm welcome home to the 10 Maine teams (including our very own OHTM team) passing into the homestretch toward the finish line. Serving as the final dinner stop, OHTM hosts teams from around the world with over 530 people in the Great Race entourage! Teams and cars from Japan, England, Australia, Germany, Canada and every corner of the United States will converge at the start with vintage automobiles dating as far back as 1912. The scope of the race is truly great: the world’s premiere old car rally travels 2,300 over 9 days bringing 142 of the world’s finest antique automobiles to town for the $160,000 event.
“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” says race director Jeff Stumb. “Last year we had several overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators on our way to having 250,000 people see the Great Race during this event.” Don’t miss your chance to meet and mingle with the larger-than-life characters of the global auto-enthusiast community. Cars and drivers will be at the museum until 6:30– then they will leave in preparation for their last day of the race, which ends in Gardner on June 30th. Pictured below is our OHTM Team: Ron Quebec (OHTM's NEAA and Events) and James Kalian (OHTM's new Curator). The team will arrive in Kentucky on June 19th, after their car arrives thanks to NEAA sponsor McCollister's Auto Transport. Ron, the driver, and James, the navigator, are a rookie team competing in The Great Race, though both of them have assisted in support teams in years prior. They are excited for this unique opportunity to be around like-minded people and drive across the country, the best way Ron can describe it is a "rolling circus that arrives in two cities a day, one for lunch and one for dinner."
A little background about the race. The year was 1983. The first Great Race was in 1983 with 69 brave auto enthusiasts, racing from L.A. to indy, and was open only to pre-World War II vehicles. The Great Race is a competitive controlled-speed endurance road race. The objective is to arrive at each checkpoint at the correct time, not the fastest. GPS and computers are not permitted, and odometers are taped over. This is a test of human mental agility and endurance as well as classic-car endurance!
Event entrance fee included with museum admission. Food and beverage options are available to purchase at the Museum Cafe. Runway 17 is reserved for race cars only at this event, we will not be able to accommodate exhibitors.
