OHTM Educators on the Road
Monday, October 3, 2022
September saw members of OHTM's education department leaving the museum to take part in events both in and out of Maine, while sharing and promoting the programming offered at Owls Head. Education Director Meghan Galinsky presented at this year’s Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) conference in Pittsburg. Megan was a guest speaker, and explained the need for ‘maker space’ in museums and schools throughout the country, while highlighting the STEM-based education programs on offer at OHTM. As part of the conference, the city’s Rachel Carson Bridge was temporarily closed so that STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)-related demonstrations could be experienced by passersby. Public Programs Specialist Rebecca Spitz represented OHTM’s education department at Stars of Katahdin, a yearly astronomy celebration hosted by the Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters. Rebecca demonstrated the “stomp rockets” used to teach aerodynamics and velocity to visiting school groups, and also served as an invited astronomer during nighttime stargazing sessions.
