The Owls Head Transportation Museum is a nonprofit educational organization. Its mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit and operate pre-1940 aircraft, ground vehicles, engines and related technologies significant to the evolution of transportation for the purpose of education.
THE OHTM APPROACH
Owls Head Transportation Museum is home to a world-class operating collection—more than 150 antique aircraft, automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, and engines—each one telling a story of invention and imagination.
Located along Maine’s scenic Midcoast, OHTM offers something for everyone: dynamic exhibits, engaging educational programs, and a full calendar of events including the beloved Wings & Wheels Airshow and the New England Auto Auction™.
Unlike many museums, OHTM brings history to life through motion. Our collection is primarily operational, giving visitors a rare chance to see, hear, and experience the machines that changed the world. Behind the scenes, a small but mighty team—supported by dedicated volunteers—works year-round to preserve and maintain these remarkable pieces of history for generations to come.
HISTORY
Owls Head Transportation Museum began with a simple handwritten idea: “Wouldn’t it be nice to have some old airplanes flying around Owls Head.”
That note—sent in 1974 from IBM’s CEO Thomas Watson, Jr. to aviator James Rockefeller—sparked a vision that would become OHTM. Rockefeller joined forces with fellow enthusiast Steve Lang, and together they laid the groundwork for a place where historic machines could be restored, flown, and celebrated by the public.
With funding for a patch of land at the Rockland Airport, they began building—first a dirt road, then a small hangar, and finally, a growing community of passionate volunteers. In 1975, the museum held its first rally: a gathering of antique planes, cars, and engines that roared, chugged, and steamed their way into the hearts of thousands.
From those humble beginnings—two cars, two planes, and one steam engine—grew an internationally recognized museum and a living, breathing tribute to transportation history. The founders’ belief was simple yet profound: a museum should not only preserve the past, but move it forward through education, engagement, and community.
Today, OHTM continues that legacy. It remains a place where machines move, stories come alive, and visitors of all ages are invited to imagine, build, and dream.
